Liverpool are back in action on Sunday with a Barclays Premier League clash at Southampton. The Reds will journey to St Mary's aiming to bolster thier hopes of Champions League qualification against one of their top-four rivals. Earlier this season, Liverpool beat the Saints 2-1 at Anfield, while in last season's corresponding fixture Brendan Rodgers' side ran out 3-0 victors.

I'll also be happy w/a draw, Teebag...if you think about it, Southampton's got more at stake here in that they're right in the fight for a top-4 spot atm, which means that, w/United's loss at Swansea today, a win for the Saints - God forbid that happen, mind you - jumps them into third, whereas w/a draw, they'd leave points on the table.

That said, we did beat them at the beginning of the year...and given how much better the squad is now compared to then, I wouldn't be surprised if Liverpool won agst. the Saints.

Sterling will start i reckon, no Gerrard still injured. Southampton have many players coming back from injury so a stern test today
"Is that a cigarette your smoking Lister?" - "No, Its a Chicken!!"

On-loan Benfica midfielder Filip Djuricic makes his first Southampton start, one of three changes to the side who draw with West Ham last time out. Left-back Matty Targett returns to action after recovering from the head injury suffered at QPR two weeks ago, and so Maya Yoshida moves back to central defence. James Ward-Prowse replaces Harrison Reed in midfield.

Raheem Sterling returns to Liverpool's starting line-up - having fully recovered from a recent foot injury - with Daniel Sturridge dropping to the bench. Former Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren replaces Mamadou Sakho, who has a hip problem, while Lazar Markovic comes in at left-wing back for Alberto Moreno.

-Southampton XI: Forster; Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Targett; Wanyama, Davis, Ward-Prowse; Djuricic, Pelle, Elia.
-Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Can, Skrtel, Lovren; Ibe, Henderson, Allen, Markovic; Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling,

"It left a sour taste"

Southampton v Liverpool (16:15 GMT)
Quote:

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, speaking earlier this week about his move away from Southampton this summer. "To be honest I'm not on social media and I don't read much of the press. But I do realise the way I left, it left a sour taste in a few people's mouths. But I have read so much false stuff in the media since that it was sad the way it all happened.

"Rickie Lambert, who is one of my best mates, left to join the same club, and he had a completely different reaction. That made it a bit more difficult too. I hope Saints fans appreciate the time we had at the club together. If I do get the boos I will take that as they miss me. I miss them and I miss playing there, I knew I was going to when I left. I've got way too much respect to celebrate if I was to score."

....from the BBC's SMS Text feed....
-Shaun Warnock, Ayrshire: Massive gamble by Brendan Rodgers to rest Daniel Sturridge. Biggest game of the season, would he not have been better resting him on Thursday? Time will tell but he better hope he gets a result.
-Ashwin, Cambridge: That starting XI from Brendan Rodgers really worries me, only two established defenders (one of whom has been shocking this season) and no established strikers. Today will decide whether he is a tactical genius or an oaf.

"What a strike from Phllippe Coutinho. We are talking just under the bar, Coutinho whipped it in as if he was taking a free-kick and it flew in. Fraser Forster had no chance. Brilliant."

PENALTY APPEAL
Southampton 0-1 Liverpool
Posted at 4 mins
Quote:

More excitement in four minutes than a whole season at Villa Park. Another good penalty shout for the hosts and again it's Filip Djuricic who sprints in behind, Joe Allen gets a piece of him, the ball wriggles out to Eljero Elia, and his strike is kicked out by Simon Mignolet. Brilliant save!

Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium
Quote:

"That is a penalty for me. The first Southampton penalty appeal wasn't one, but the second is a 100% penalty. The Liverpool defence are absolutely all over the place. An excellent save by Simon Mignolet from Eljero Elia's shot but in the first five minutes Liverpool's defending has been shocking. There are huge gaps in between the lines."
